WILMETTE – The Wilmette Police Department is investigating a residential burglary that occurred in the 500 block of Laramie. The burglary occurred on Wednesday, October 19, sometime in the daylight hours. The offender(s) forced entry to a side door. The offenders ransacked the home and ultimately took U.S. currency.

The police sent a Crime Alert email on Friday evening, which also reported on a reported phone scam.

Two residents told police this week they received phone calls from scammers demanding money. These callers tend to target elderly residents and purport to be from a utility or government agency, according to police.

The crime alert advised:

“Never provide financial information during an unsolicited phone call. If you have elderly friends or neighbors that do not receive our bulletins, please discuss this with them. No government agency or utility will call you in an unsolicited manner and demand money. Politely and quickly terminate the call. If you need to satisfy your curiosity, you can call a utility representative at a later time. ”

The police department also asked people to lock their cars and remove the keys, as there continues to be an active pattern of auto thefts and auto burglaries targeting the northern suburbs. Although this pattern has slowed down, it is still occurring.
