WINNETKA – This spring, New Trier High School will offer a new scholarship and host a benefit concert in honor of Tim Estberg, a 15-year veteran choral teacher who was a mentor and role model to countless students. Donations to the fund are now being accepted at http://bit.ly/EstbergMemorialFund.
Estberg, who led the Music and Media, Speech & Theatre departments on New Trier’s freshman campus, passed away from cancer in August 2016.
During his time at New Trier, Estberg served as a longtime freshman boys’ adviser and sponsor of several student groups, including the student-led variety show Lagniappe-Potpourri, numerous plays and musicals, and the gay-straight student alliance Committed to Action. He was also part of several District leadership groups and committees.
Donations to the Tim Estberg Memorial Fund will be used to support an annual scholarship and other New Trier causes that benefit students. The Tim Estberg Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a New Trier graduating senior, will recognize the significant impact Estberg made on the lives of students. If donations exceed the amount needed to create a perpetual scholarship at New Trier, the district will work with Estberg’s family to identify other opportunities within the school to honor his memory.
Athena Arvanitis, Director of Student Life and chair of New Trier’s Scholarship Committee, is working with Estberg’s family to establish criteria for the scholarship. More details about the application process will be available in February or March.
The New Trier Music Department will also host the Tim Estberg Benefit Concert this spring. Current and former students and colleagues are invited to perform together on stage in celebration of Estberg and the impact he had on the New Trier community. All proceeds will benefit the Tim Estberg Memorial Fund. More information regarding the benefit concert will be available in late winter.
