Go Green Wilmette and Wilmette Public Works offer a free event to recycle block Styrofoam, which cannot be recycled through the Village’s recycling program. Bring your post-holiday Styrofoam December 27 to January 9 to one of four locations in Wilmette. No “peanuts” or “clamshells,” please.
For any updates on dates and hours, please visit www.gogreenwilmette.org.
WHEN: December 27, 2016 – January 9, 2017
WHAT: GGW will collect and transport the Styrofoam to Abt Electronics (Glenview) for recycling. The collection is free to the public. This recycling event includes the following three provisions:
- Only white-colored, “block” Styrofoam will be accepted.
- No loose packaging “peanuts” will be accepted: they can be dropped off at local UPS stores.
- No “clamshell” food containers will be accepted. Clean clamshell containers are accepted as part of the Village’s curbside recycling program.
Residents can drop off Styrofoam at any of the locations listed below. Please note the drop-off hours will vary with specific locations.
- 1139 Manor Drive, (front porch) 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., 7-days a week.
- 715 Linden Ave., (front porch) 9 a.m. -7 p.m., 7-days a week.
- 2024 Greenwood Ave., (behind home), 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., M-F
- Public Works Facility, 711 Laramie Ave., (in the office) M-F, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This event provides residents with an opportunity to recycle block Styrofoam that is used in the packaging of appliances and other fragile goods. Solid white polystyrene, or Styrofoam, is not currently recycled through the residential curbside program due to limitations of processing capacity at the large-scale waste-sorting facilities and fluctuations of global demand in the marketplace.
Abt Appliance Store has a dedicated machine to process the Styrofoam. Abt sells the re-constituted product to manufacturers of plastic goods. This is a positive outcome for a good that will not decompose for hundreds of years in a landfill.
