GLENCOE – At least two homes and six vehicles were burglarized in Glencoe in the early morning hours of May 9, according to a new release from the Glencoe Police Department. All of the vehicles were unlocked and the homes were either unlocked or unsecured.
Glencoe police responded to a 2 a.m. call from a village resident who said someone had attempted to gain entry to his home through an open window. Officers discovered that entry had been made and items had been stolen. While checking the area and during the subsequent investigation, officers discovered another residential burglary as well as several vehicle burglaries in the area.
The crimes were focused in a small area bounded by Green Bay Road, Grove Street, Jefferson Avenue, and Adams Avenue. Thieves targeted unlocked vehicles and unsecured homes in search of valuables – in all, they gained entry into two homes and six vehicles. In each case, the vehicles had been left unlocked by the owners, and the houses were left unlocked or windows were not secured, according to Richard S. Weiner, the village’s deputy chief of public safety.
While responding to the original call, a suspect vehicle was seen leaving the area. A Winnetka police unit attempted to stop the vehicle; however, the suspects fled and abandoned the vehicle in Wilmette. A short time later, two suspects were arrested.
Officers discovered that the vehicle had been stolen from Winnetka the previous day, the Glencoe Police Department news release stated. Glencoe, Winnetka, and Wilmette detectives worked on the joint investigation and much of the stolen property has been recovered. Criminal charges including residential burglary and vehicle burglary have been filed:
- Taylor Davis-Starling, female, DOB 7/13/66, Glenview
- Lorenzo Wimberly, male, DOB 2/5/95, Waukegan
It is apparent that criminals continue to target our area because it contains attractive and accessible homes and vehicles. In particular, the targeted vehicles were left unlocked by the owners and the house windows and doors were not secured. Glencoe Public Safety is collaborating closely with other local law enforcement agencies to address these types of crimes. We are also seeking your assistance in preventing these crimes of opportunity.
- Lock and secure unattended vehicles at all times
- Ensure that valuables left inside are hidden from plain view
- Do not leave the keys or key fobs inside the vehicle
- Close and lock home and garage doors and windows, especially overnight
- Remain alert at all times
