Governing the state of Illinois requires many things: intelligence, the ability to build relationships, and a commitment to representing the people of this great state. Last I checked, money does not create a great governor. And yet your recent cover story on the gubernatorial election seemed to make money the deciding factor. You only profiled the millionaire/billionaire club. One would think that at this sensitive time in our state and our country, we would know better than to think having money equates to effective governing skills.
The candidates you profiled may well be fine candidates, but why leave out other strong contenders? Unless you think the race is won by name recognition and wealth alone? If so, that would be a sad day for us all. I am strongly backing State Senator Daniel Biss – who represents part of our very own region – as the next governor of Illinois. I have heard Senator Biss speak on several occasions and I believe, without a doubt, he knows how to govern. He has also helped pass more than 80 bills in the Illinois Senate. He understands how to get the work done.
At the end of the day, isn’t that what our state so desperately needs? The job of governor – and it is a job, not a campaign – requires experience and effectiveness. Senator Daniel Biss has these qualities in spades. He would run our state well, and I am sorry to see you cut his impact off at the pass based on the size of other people’s bank accounts and family histories. In the tradition of great state and national leaders Illinois has produced in the past, he would represent the people. I ask that you cover his campaign and do your job as well as he’d do his.
With thanks,
