Wilmette Names New Fire Chief

Ben Wozney

WILMETTE – Deputy Chief Ben Wozney has been selected to become the Wilmette Fire Department’s new chief. Wozney will succeed Chief Mike McGreal, who retires August 2, 2017 after 29 years with the department.

“I am proud to announce the appointment of Ben Wozney as Fire Chief,” Village Manager Tim Frenzer said. ”He is a strong leader who has the skills and experience necessary to ensure that the Fire Department continues to provide exceptional service to the community.”

Wozney started his career in Wilmette as a firefighter/paramedic in 1995, was promoted to Lieutenant in 2010, Duty Chief in 2015, and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2016. Wozney has earned the executive Scholar Award from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School for Non-for-Profit Management, is a certified Chief Fire Officer, and has served as the Director of the MABAS Division III Water Rescue Team, overseeing a team of 86 members across the region. Wozney is a graduate of New Trier High School and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

As Deputy Chief, Wozney has been responsible for managing the daily operations for the Fire Department’s 50 employees and two fire stations. He has been an integral member of the Village’s management team, working closely with Chief McGreal in regards to the Fire Department’s strategic plan and employee development. As Deputy Chief, Wozney has been a leader in all aspects of the Fire Department’s operations including budget development and administration, human resource management, strategic planning, intergovernmental relations, and community relations.
