Max Iida stands out at age group state meet

Here comes Max.

The Madly Talented Max Iida.

The younger brother of Sam Iida came up with an impressive showing at the 2017 Age Group Long Course State Championships.

Sam Iida, a four-year star at Glenbrook South and University of Arizona recruit, was the top swimmer in the state last winter.

Max Iida, 14, turned in a number of splashy performances in the state meet at the Pleasant Prairie Rec Plex on July 27-30.

Swimming for the Glenview Titan Aquatic Club, Iida was one of the stars in the boys 13-14 age division, finishing first in two individual races: 200-meter breaststroke (2:25.80), 100 breast (1:08.68).

He added a runner-up efforts in the 400 IM (4:46.60) and 200 IM (2:14.48

Iida also helped GTAC collect a ton of points in relays. He teamed with Timothy Hayes, Quinn Loughlin and Elliott Chen to win the 400 medley in state-record time (4:06.19).

And he combined efforts with Chen, Loughlin and Brendan Forrest to earn a co-championship with the Academy Bullets in the 800 free relay. Both teams were clocked in a state record time (8:12.20). That same foursome also took third in the 400 relay (3:47.11).

Chen’s best individual effort came in the 200 free (2^nd, 1:59.30). He was third in the 100 free (54.88) and eighth in the 50 free (25.73).

Loughlin claimed a runner-up finish in the 200 butterfly (2:12.53). He placed third in the 100 fly (59.87).

Hayes helped out GTAC by placing seventh in the 200 back (2:18.91) and 400 IM (4:58.15) and ninth in the 200 IM (2:20.08).

In 400 medley relay, Kevin Solys, Jackson Hogue and Nicholas Khatkovyy teamed with Forrest to take 10^th place (4:24.70).

Boys 11-12: Alexander Roytman took seventh in the 200 breast (2:56.80) and eighth in the 100 breast (1:21.55).

Girls 11-12: Michelle Kaner shared the 200 backstroke title with Hinsdale Swim Club’s Kendall Pickering (2:27.38). She also earned runner-up honors in the 50 backstroke (31.89) and 100 back (1:08.76), while she placed fourth in the 100 free (1:02.39) and seventh in the 200 free (2:17.45) and 50 free (28.71).

GTAC ended up ninth in the combined team standings (785.5 points).

Glenbrook Aquatics

Henry Chen and Euben Ko were the standouts for Glenbrook Aquatics, which placed 16^th (429 points) in the combined team standings.

Competing in the 11-12 Boys Division, Chen produced a fourth-place finish in the 50 breast (39.87). He added a sixth in the 200 IM (2:54.57) and a ninth in the 400 free (5:29.47).

Ko finished second in the 50 free (31.85) and added a 10^th-place finish in the 100 free (1:12.06).

Chen and Ko also teamed up with Evan Gitlevich and Noah Chen to take fifth in two relays: 200 free (2:15.90) and 200 medley (2:31.93).

Gitlevich added a ninth in the 100 breast (1:34.23).

Boys 11-12: Jacob Geman, Andrew Lyubashenko, Elan Schonfeld and Josh Hyun had solid meets for GA.

Hyun raced to a seventh place in the 50 free (28.08). Geman ended up ninth in the 50 back (33.10). Lyubashenko took 10^th in the 100 breast (1:22.93). And Schonfeld was 10^th in the 200 breast (3:00.21).

Schonfeld, Geman, Lyubashenko and Hyun placed sixth in the 400 free relay (4:19.67) and eighth in the 400 medley relay (4:58.37).

Girls 10 and Under: Laura Teegarden was ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:23.45).

New Trier Swim Club

New Trier Swim Club ended up 12^th in the combined team standings with 620.5 points.

Kaelyn Gridley just missed winning a state title in the Girls 13-14 Division. She was clocked in a second-place time of 2:37.68 in the 200 breast — only to be edged out by Patriot Aquatics’ Hannah Liu (2:37.60). Her time in the 100 breast was 1:13.57, placing her second to Liu (1:12.13).

Greta Pelzek was another major scorer for NTSC. She took third in the 200 butterfly (2:22.61), fifth in the 400 free (4:35.08), fifth in the 800 free (9:26.57), fifth in the 200 IM (2:28.81), sixth in the 200 free (2:10.78) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.46).

And Pelzek and Gridley teamed with Leslie Wendel and Anna Werts to place fifth in the 400 medley relay (4:32.43) and ninth in the 400 relay (4:11.44) and 800 relay (9:12.23).

Girls 10 and Under: Madelyn Ohr earned runner-up honors in the 50 breast (40.53), while she took sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:22.66) and 100 breast (1:33.09).

Ohr also teamed with Elyse Newlands, Maeve O’Donnell and Ana Kimball in the 200 free relay (7^th, 2:16.64). That same foursome placed eighth in the 200 medley relay (2:37.19).

Boys 11-12: Grant Koeppen took second in the 50 breast (35.37), fourth in the 100 breast (1:18.27) and sixth in the 200 breast (2:54.47).

Boys 10 and Under: Henry Woodman, Luke Friestedt, Owen Pelzak and Mason Cotter joined forces to take ninth in the 200 medley relay (2:35.04). Friestedt also placed 10^th in two individual events: 100 breast (1:34.48) and 50 breast (43.02).

Lake Forest Swim Club

Mary Grace King turned in solid work at the state meet.

Competing in the Girls 11-12 Division, she placed in five events: 4^th in the 200 butterfly (2:35.77), 5^th in the 400 free (4:42.75), 5^th in the 200 back (2:31.23), 8^th in the 200 IM (2:35.77) and 10^th in the 100 back (1:11.91).
