The Adopt-a-Beach cleanup efforts are taking place along Great Lakes shorelines on Saturday, September 16, including in Evanston, Wilmette and Highland Park.
The clean up at Evanston Dempster-Greenwood Beach is coordinated by several groups, including the Illinois Council of Skin and Scuba Divers, so it will have an underwater cleanup as well as a land beach clean up. Click here for details.
The Wilmette Harbor Rotary is hosting a public event at Gilson Park Beach, also on September 16. Click here for information on that event.
Regionally, thousands of people are expected to pitch in for the annual cleanup, which is the largest day of action for the Great Lakes each year.
Last year, more than 6,900 volunteers picked up 16,079 pounds of debris at more than 250 sites around the region. In addition to cleaning up beaches and giving them some love after a busy summer season, volunteers collect valuable data. The results: cleaner beaches and data on pollution sources that can be used to develop solutions to pollution problems.
Volunteers can find a cleanup site by visiting www.greatlakesadopt.org.
Don’t see one in your town? Volunteers also can create their own Great Lakes cleanup events.
