Members of New Trier High School’s Chinese Music and Arts club performed two instrumental pieces to a packed house at Chicago’s Navy Pier on Sunday, Feb. 21 as part of a “Neighborhoods of the World” celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Thanks in part to a grant from the New Trier Educational Foundation and support from New Trier’s Student Alliance, the club was able to purchase a number of traditional Chinese folk music instruments last year and form a unique Chinese music ensemble, one of the first in a U.S. high school. At the event, organized by the Chinese Fine Arts Society of Chicago, New Trier students performed in public for the first time while dressed in student-designed costumes.
