Glenbrook South’s Savontae Garner and New Trier’s Penelope Tir have been named the DailyNorthShore.com Athletes of the Month
Glenbrook South’s football team turned things around this fall. The Titans, who finished 1-8 a year ago, head into the final weekend of the season with five wins and a chance to qualify for the state playoffs. And Garner has played a key role in the turnaround. The senior running back is averaging 6.6 yards per carry. He has rushed for a team-high nine touchdowns. He also is the team’s second leading receiver with 131 yards on eight catches with one TD.
Meanwhile, Tir became only the second Trevian in program history to capture medalist honors at the girls golf state tournament. She came up with splendid rounds of 73 and 71 at the par-72 Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth to edge a pair of other Class 2A competitors by one stroke on Oct. 13-14. The junior — sixth at state as a freshman and fourth last year — also returned home with a team medal. NT’s talented crew topped state runner-up Barrington by 10 strikes to claim the program’s seventh overall title and third in eight years.
