WILMETTE – A burglar or burglars pried the exterior door of a Wilmette home on the 500 block of Laramie Avenue and stole numerous pieces of jewelry between 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 24, according to police. The resident was not home at the time of the break-in.
Reports of residential burglaries in crease during the fall and winter, the Wilmette Police Department stated in a news release. This can be attributed to it getting dark earlier and residents being out for the holidays.
Here are crime prevention tips shared by the Wilmette police:
- Lock all the doors of your home, garage and car.
- Also, lock your home’s windows, including the second floor.
- Always activate your burglary alarm system when you leave and at night, if applicable.
- Increase the lighting around your home and have lights on timers. A house with no lights on means an empty house.
- Leave a television or radio on or have it on a timer so it’s on during the evening hours.
- Stop your mail and newspaper or have it picked up, if you are leaving for more than the day. Also, arrange for snow on your driveway to be shoveled. Have a neighbor or friend park their car in your driveway occasionally and check for packages.
- Immediately call the police if you see suspicious activity such as:
People sitting in a running car parked on a residential street for a longer than normal time period. - People standing in front of a residence and looking around.
- People who try not to be seen or who leave the area after being noticed by you.
- People walking in the alley slowly and looking into garages and backyards.
A Car driving through the neighborhood or the alley slowly or repeatedly. - Police Department Re-Accreditation
