Sharing Good Will … and Gelt

WILMETTE – Neighbors, young and old, gathered to light the Menorah stationed every year outside Village Hall on Sunday, December 17. What was unique about this year was the exciting activity that finished it off, one that will remain etched in the memory of all present.

The estimated crowd of 100 celebrants witnessed the first ever ‘Gelt Drop’. Rabbi Moshe Teldon, youth director at the Chabad of Wilmette, climbed an 8-ft ladder and showered the traditional chocolate gelt over the heads of the children.

The age-old tradition of giving gelt — coins in Yiddish — was designed to offer children positive reinforcement for exemplary behavior, particularly as a reward for diligence in their studies, as well as to train them into giving charity. A more contemporary version of giving gelt evolved into chocolate coins in gold foil wrapping, which is now frequently associated with the holiday.

“We wanted to take a tradition and make it magical. For a kid, there is nothing more thrilling than chocolate dropping from the sky! I’m hoping this created amazing memories for all those present,” said Esther Leah Teldon, co-director of Chabad’s Hebrew School.

The free event began with the giant menorah lighting, singing holiday songs, and music. Judah the Maccabee, the hero of the Hannukkah miracle, posed for photos with many of the children and a Dreidel-Man mascot added to the festive environment as well. Participants also enjoyed holiday jelly donuts and other treats.

“It is a holiday that enriches our lives with the light of tradition,” said Rabbi Teldon. “In ancient times our ancestors rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem with the Menorah. Today, we rededicate ourselves to making this world a better and brighter place. Hanukkah also propagates the universal message that ultimately good will prevail over evil, freedom over oppression and light over darkness.”
