Challah bread
WILMETTE – Close to two-hundred Jewish women from across the North Shore will gather for an evening of song and celebration as they mix, knead and shape the special tradition of Challah at the semi-annual Wilmette’s Mega Challah Bake.
Hosted by the Chabad of Wilmette’s Jewish Women’s Circle, the event starts at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 22 at the Center for Jewish Life & Learning at 2904 Old Glenview Road.
Attendees will learn how to mix, knead and shape their own challah and gain an understanding of the meaning behind the traditional bread and its special significance to women. Participants will bring home their challah dough for baking in their homes.
“Challah baking is a time-honored tradition,” said Rivke Flinkenstein, co-director of Chabad and the event coordinator. “This event underscores the unity of all Jewish women, of all backgrounds and affiliations, and presents an opportunity for women and girls from across the area to join together and share in this beautiful activity.”
Pronounced with a hard guttural ch, Challah refers to a braided bread traditionally eaten at Shabbat and other Jewish holidays, and is considered one of the most recognized Jewish foods. At the Challah Bake, she said, “we will have the chance to experience a tradition that many have seen their mother or grandmother perform, yet have never had the opportunity to do themselves.”
